Wilfred Owen immediately opens the poem with powerful imagery in order to encapsulate the harrowing psychological and physical effects that impact the soldiers on the battlefield. This is exemplified through the opening phrase ‘Our brains ache, in the merciless iced east winds that knive us.’ The ache in the brain can be interpreted as a metaphor for the psychological torment the soldier is forced to endure. Furthermore, the use of the noun ‘ache’ establishes a physical discomfort the soldier feels due to the extreme cold. The wind, once personified as ‘merciless’ and ‘iced’, becomes a weapon that ‘knives’ into the soldiers, inflicting constant pain. The use of the graphic verb and personification in ‘knives’ is particularly interesting as perhaps Owen attempts to perceive forces of nature to be the greater enemy and threat on the battlefield, as opposed to opposing soldiers - emphasising that although nature may seem placid and tranquil to begin with, it always has the potential to overpower mankind- even at their most powerful state as soldiers in war. By Owen constructing this opening line to contrast the romanticised notions of war, perhaps the writer aims to ‘expose’ the harsh reality of war - as shown in the poems name ‘exposure’. Instead of noble values such as glory and heroism, soldiers face constant torment and agonising pain, enabling the reader to question whether if war is worth such sacrifice.
